The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited Subomi and Wahab, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for questioning over their alleged involvement in the abuse of the naira.
In a letter signed by Michael Wetkas, acting director of the Lagos directorate of the EFCC, the commission instructed the brothers to report to the head of the special operations team at its 15A Awolowo Road office by 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The Okoya siblings gained attention after appearing in a promotional video in which they were accused of “abusing the naira.” The footage, which featured a police officer holding bundles of N1,000 notes while the brothers danced to a song, sparked widespread outrage online.
On January 10, Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), confirmed the police officer involved in the video had been arrested and taken into custody for further disciplinary proceedings.
“The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman Chief Okoya, where they were seen mishandling the naira, has been identified and detained,” Adejobi stated on X. “His actions are deemed unethical, and he will face appropriate disciplinary action. The police force condemns such behavior and remains committed to upholding its core values and integrity.”
This move by the EFCC is part of the agency’s heightened efforts to address the defacement and abuse of the national currency, as outlined under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
In 2024, the EFCC intensified its crackdown on celebrity naira abuse, with notable figures such as Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest facing charges. On April 4, Bobrisky was arrested for defacing naira notes, while on April 16, Cubana Chief Priest was charged with similar offenses.
