A representative of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Indian Legislative Assembly, Gurpreet Gogi, tragically passed away after a firearm accident late Friday night at his residence in Punjab.
Family members reported that Gogi was handling a gun when it discharged unexpectedly, inflicting a fatal head wound. The incident took place around midnight, and Gogi was quickly taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body is currently in the hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja confirmed that the shooting appeared to be accidental. “According to the family, he accidentally shot himself and sustained a head injury. The exact cause will be clarified after the post-mortem report is received,” he stated.
Gogi, who joined AAP in 2022, had gained significant popularity in his Ludhiana constituency. His victory in the state elections over a two-time Congress MLA had made him a well-known figure. His unexpected death has left both his supporters and political peers in deep shock.
Police are conducting an investigation into the incident, interviewing family members and looking into the circumstances to ensure there was no foul play involved.
