Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has exercised his prerogative of mercy, granting freedom to 45 prisoners convicted of various offenses.

The inmates, who had spent considerable time in the state’s correctional facilities, were released as part of a New Year gesture in alignment with the governor’s “People First” administration policy.

A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, indicated that the release was approved by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ededem Ani, and was in accordance with Section 212 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended).

The offenses for which the prisoners were convicted include felony, stealing, assault, cultism, armed robbery, and illegal entry, among others.

“it’s important to give a second chance to those pardoned and considered reformed, as well as the need to decongest the prison,” he stated.
