Nigeria has officially accepted an invitation to join BRICS as a partner country, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.
In a statement released in Abuja by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Acting Spokesperson for the ministry, the government highlighted the strategic benefits of this partnership, which aligns with Nigeria’s aspirations for inclusive growth and regional integration.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has accepted the invitation to join BRICS as a partner country,” the statement declared.
The ministry emphasized that Nigeria’s engagement with BRICS—a bloc of major emerging economies—represents a commitment to fostering international collaboration, expanding economic opportunities, and establishing strategic alliances that support national development goals.
“BRICS, as a collective of major emerging economies, presents a unique platform for Nigeria to enhance trade, investment, and socio-economic cooperation with member countries,” the statement said.
The partnership is expected to focus on shared goals in trade and investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change.
The ministry noted that this aligns with Nigeria’s national objectives for economic inclusivity, regional cooperation, and active participation in building a more equitable global economic system, in line with the principle of strategic autonomy.
The statement also expressed optimism about fostering innovation and promoting people-to-people exchanges through constructive engagement with BRICS members, reinforcing Nigeria’s strategic priorities and national interests.
