The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that both the Port Harcourt Refinery, with a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day (bpd), and the Kaduna Refinery are currently undergoing extensive overhauls aimed at achieving global standards.
The company clarified that the rehabilitation efforts at the Port Harcourt Refinery, which has a 60,000 bpd capacity, and the Warri Refinery, go beyond typical Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) procedures, adding they are comprehensive overhauls intended to align with international best practices.
Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., issued the clarification in a statement responding to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks regarding the status of the refurbished 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and the Warri Refinery.
Obasanjo had previously raised concerns about the operational viability of these refineries, questioning their effectiveness and accusing NNPC Ltd. of misleading the public about their operational status.
In response, Soneye highlighted that the overhaul of both the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries was a significant milestone for NNPC Ltd., with similar efforts being carried out at the second Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries. He emphasized that NNPC Ltd. is committed to upholding global standards in maintaining and improving the refineries to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
Soneye further extended an invitation to the former President, inviting him to visit the rehabilitated refineries to see the progress firsthand. He expressed high regard for Obasanjo’s contributions to the nation’s development and underscored the value of his insights.
“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey,” Soneye said. “His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance, which will always be welcomed and cherished. We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a respected statesman who has made significant contributions to the growth and progress of Nigeria. His dedication to national development and his right to speak on matters of national importance are both deeply respected.”
Soneye also spoke about NNPC Ltd.’s transformation from a loss-making entity to a profit-driven global energy leader. He noted that the company has expanded beyond oil and gas to become a fully integrated energy company. NNPC Ltd. now focuses not only on traditional resources but also on cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable energy solutions to meet the growing demands of Nigeria.
“This progress has been driven by the visionary leadership of the NNPC Limited board and the management team led by GCEO Mele Kyari, alongside President Bola Tinubu’s transformative policies in the energy sector,” Soneye concluded.
