One of the prominent clubs in the English Premier League, Everton, has dismissed Sean Dyche as manager, ending his tenure of less than two years at Goodison Park.
The 53-year-old’s departure comes just hours before Everton’s FA Cup third-round clash with League One side Peterborough.
In a statement, the club announced that under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will oversee the team for the upcoming fixture. Four members of Dyche’s backroom staff – Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer – have also left the club.
Currently 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone, Everton suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Toffees failed to register a single shot on target during the match and have won only three of their 19 league games this season.
Dyche took over from Frank Lampard on January 30, 2023, when Everton were in the relegation zone. His efforts helped the club narrowly avoid relegation that season with a decisive 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day. The following season, Dyche led Everton to a 15th-place finish, despite the team being docked eight points for financial rule breaches.
Though Everton’s defense has shown resilience this season with seven clean sheets, their attacking struggles have persisted, scoring just 15 goals – the second-lowest tally in the league, ahead of only bottom-placed Southampton.
This season marks Everton’s final campaign at their iconic Goodison Park home before moving to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. The club is also navigating a period of transition following last month’s £400 million takeover by the US-based Friedkin Group.
