Young gay men in Italy can train to become Catholic priests if they do not endorse or promote “so-called gay culture,” according to recently issued guidelines approved by the Vatican.
The Italian Bishops’ Conference released the 68-page guidelines online, emphasizing the Church’s commitment to celibacy.
These guidelines allow gay men to enter seminaries, but with a stipulation: those openly expressing their homosexuality or supporting related cultural movements are not eligible.
“The Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary and to Holy Orders those who practise homosexuality, present deeply rooted homosexual tendencies, or support the so-called gay culture,” the document states.
The guidelines also stress the importance of candidates embracing celibacy, describing it as a “gift” and a deliberate choice.
The Vatican has endorsed these guidelines, reflecting ongoing efforts to balance tradition with inclusivity under Pope Francis’ leadership.
Pope Francis has advocated for a more inclusive Church since the beginning of his papacy. In 2013, he famously remarked, “If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?” However, reports in June revealed he used a controversial term in private discussions, expressing concern about the presence of gay men in seminaries.
James Martin, a US Jesuit priest and LGBTQ advocate, interpreted the guidelines as a potential shift in policy. “If a gay man is able to lead a healthy, chaste, and celibate life, he may be considered,” Martin told AFP.
This nuanced approach aims to balance traditional Church doctrine with evolving views on LGBTQ issues within Catholic communities worldwide.
