Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, arrived at the assembly complex on Thursday, accompanied by security personnel.
Sources revealed that Obasa entered the Speaker’s Office around noon, following reports of security aides being withdrawn from the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Segun Ajiboye, Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, confirmed the incident, alleging that Obasa and his team forcefully accessed the office.
“We’re at the assembly now,” a source close to Obasa stated.
The assembly has been in crisis since Obasa’s removal, which led to Meranda’s election as Speaker. Lawmakers had accused Obasa of poor leadership, chronic lateness to legislative sessions, authoritarian tendencies, and a strained relationship with both colleagues and the state governor. Allegations of abuse of office, intimidation, and mismanagement of resources were also raised.
In a bid to resolve the conflict, senior figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) — including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode — convened meetings with political stakeholders and assembly members, reportedly at the direction of President Bola Tinubu.
Following these discussions, it emerged that both Obasa and Meranda might step aside to allow another lawmaker to take over leadership.
Chief Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council, disclosed that one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West was being considered as the new Speaker.
